The Mod on the Scooter image was based on the Quadrophenia Album cover and was once a Logo for a website around 3000 years ago called ‘March of the Mods’.
The Gents were a relatively unknown British Mod band in the 1980’s and released several albums, the best of which by far in my humble opinion was ‘How it all began’. Stand out tracks were ‘Revenge’ and ‘The Faker’.
‘The Gents’ picture here and the photo montage were front and rear cover designs I did for a rumoured ‘Best of album’ several years earlier in 2004. This was after hearing about this through a guy who ran the ‘March of the Mods’ website. He was in touch with members of The Gents who had long since split by this time. I passed the artwork on for the band members to see but heard nothing much back and pretty much forgot about it.
How it all began was then re released in 2011 in CD and digital format with additional material as a ‘Best of’ album. As it happened, they eventually used the original album artwork which I loved. This seemed very fitting and was perfectly fine by me.
I was then recently contacted by Martin Burton, lead singer of the Gents. He said he had only recently come across my artwork after someone had posted it on the Gents Facebook page and said how much he liked it. This was great to hear and really good of him to take the time to get in touch. What he also said was that the Gents had been reformed for several years but were now about to do their ‘farewell’ gig in Barnsley. I’m gutted that I didn’t know they’d reformed and also that I couldn’t make final the gig. I have seen some of the footage posted on the Gents Facebook page though which I’ve now joined and it looks like it was a really great night. The Gents and their music will apparently live on though in the form of ‘The Last Man’, a new group featuring Martin Burton and fellow Gents Guitarist Steve Chambers.
The ‘Revenge’ drawing was a mock up of a single cover I did many years ago after first seeing the Gents at a couple of gigs in Derbyshire in the early 1980’s. This was done in pencil/pencil crayon.
Both the Gents and March of the Mods images were created in Adobe Illustrator and were some of my earliest efforts at vector based drawing. The Gents photo montage was created in Adobe Photoshop.
The final image is a logo designed for the Gents Twitter page created in Adobe Illustrator.
